Dog Food Recalls

Dog food can be recalled for a few reasons. Many recalls are voluntary but usually are initiated after incidents of dogs getting sick or dying. We will post up to date dog food recalls to help inform those of you still feeding commercial dog food. We hope this helps.

What is the main reason for a dog food recall?

The main reason for a dog food recall is high levels of aflatoxin. Aflatoxins are toxic compounds produces by molds that are highly toxic. The aflatoxins can cause liver failure and cancer. Corn and soybeans are generally the source of the molds and the aflatoxin. Often the mold is grown when there is an exceptionally wet growing season or when the grain is store improperly.

Mold can also be grown if the finished dog food is store improperly in your home. Always store commercial dog food in a cool and dry place.

If your dog has eaten dog food with high aflatoxin levels he will become very sick and may even die. It is important to seek veterinary care immediately.

We recently lost our pet because of kidney failure. It happened so fast. He was fine on friday, then saturday he was walking like he was intoxicated. Sunday he had to be taken out side for a bathroom break that were chrystalized the following day. We fed him pedigree mostly with wet food ol’roy mixed daily. He did receive meat daily too mostly cooked. He died monday morning at the vet clinic, we tried everything the vet could do but he will be missed. After reading about other pets with the same symtoms. We are going to start feeding our two new puppies homemade raw meat and hopefully they will live longer that 7.

With our last dog he was well taken care of so we thought never checking, just believing the commercials on tv. We ran our dog daily 4 km he had fresh water and he was groomed professional monthy. Regular pet visits all shots every thing you are supposed to do when you have a memeber of your family that you are responsible for. I just wished we would have checked the internet before it was too late. Guarteed we will not make the same mistake with our new puppies. May our best friend rest in peace we loved him so much and he will be missed.

So sorry Michelle. So, so, sorry… A good friend of mine recently lost her dog and the culprit was the dried chicken jerky that comes from China but sold her under a named called Wagon Train.
Her beloved little dog also died of kidney failure. We are losing several dogs in my city with kidney failure and the vets are saying it is the chicken jerky from China. If it comes from China it might not even be chicken, it could be dog or cat meat. We know the FDA doesn’t give a hoot about dogs because it can barely give a hoot about what we eat unless fatalities occur. I’m sorry for your loss.

I’ve read the many entries about Waggin Train treats. Unfortunately I bought these a few times at Costco and fed them to my 5 schnauzers. Thus far, there have been no problems but I will never do that again and will check here on a regular basis to see what else may be popping up. Above all, my heart goes out to the many of you who have suffered the loss and/or sickness of your beloved pets~
I arrived here just looking for a home made dog food recipe that included all nutrition requirements. (it’s here, there is also a treat available from the same company that sells the nutritional supplements etc)

      Brenda,

Dinovite also makes a freeze dried beef dog treat, click here to view. The treats are made in the USA and contain no fillers. Super healthy and dogs love them.

my goldens love your dinovite! they especially love your very simple raw food recipe for dogs too! i do wonder if you can feed raw fish to dogs? and raw chicken with bones? i do give my dogs raw beef ribs for snacks occasionally, as i have discontinued stored bought rawhide.
    thanks for your response! 🙂
